In the Egg (Parts 1 – 4)

Part 1
I am in the egg,
cells dividing, aligning,
becoming brainstem.

Who knows how the heart
emerges beating like that?
Rhythmic potato.

I am not yet “me”,
Or “me” is this clump of stuff -
How ridiculous.

I am separated parts
not yet a whole.
I am in the egg.

Part 2
Am I in the egg?
Or am I just cracking up?
I need a break…through!

Ha! What a chicken.
Make sure I am fully grown
Before I breathe air.

I must learn how to
Filter out the good from bad.
Nourishing? Toxic?

Get close to others
Yes, and learn to read. The signs
say, “keep your distance”.

Part 3
This egg life
Is not all it’s
cracked-up to be.

I feel scrambled,
Nothing makes sense,
Everything hurts.

Who’s in charge?
I wanna speak to
The manager!

Oh, it’s just “me”
Hoping all these parts
Make more than the sum.

Part 4
All I’ve known is the egg,
At least I finally got past
The bad yoke stage (ha!)

My parts have become
Bone, skin, feathers
Hard beak, stiff wing.

My body remembers that
Eggs are - after all-
Made to be broken.

“Now what?”, (I cheep!)
Guess it’s time find out
what it means to be cage-free.
